ALTERNATIVE THINKING

Today was Graduation Day in Dunedin. It is surely a day of triumph for many families. The town full of proud-as-punch parents; the mothers in their Trelisse Cooper dresses bought especially for such a special occasion and Dad in his dark suit looking as successful as he feels on this fine warm Dunedin day. They all burst into the streets with big bouquets and clutching the actual degree encased in plastic as they chattered and clattered their way to cafes and restaurants to celebrate. It was a day for families to feel successful; the teething, the nappies, the scraped knees and terrible smart-ass cheek at 14 all forgotten. The black gowns rushing the streets like a flock of over excited ravens.

And then I met Sara. She is a Bird of Paradise amongst the sleek black birds. She wears cobalt blue eyeliner around her whole eye, green sox and black lipstick. I think she may be a man. Families matter to her too but her take on it all is different. She is funny and wise. I know nothing it seems. It’s the diversity she told me. We all need to be able to take our own path, find our own way. It’s fabulous for these families but I don’t want to be them. I am just as successful, it’s just that I have different goals. All power to you Sara.
